I suspect it's a side-effect of the double-standard regarding men vs. Male actors of a certain age are much more likely to be cast in romantic lead roles than their female counterparts, resulting in many films featuring couples where the man is much older than the woman.
Thus "a certain age" unfortunately starts earlier for women than men, and so a larger percentage of women as a whole are "of a certain age" by these standards.
