First of all he attempted to reform Hinduism. And so faced much opposition and ridicule from the orthodox sections of our country. But, finally he proved that he was not out to destroy the best traditions of the country, but was merely brushing away some of the impurities crept into it.
To rescue the Indian society from its superstitions and injustices, he favoured modern Western education for its scientific and inquiring spirit and broad ideas. He was deeply distressed by the position of women in the society, so he campaigned for rights for women, including the right for widows to remarry and to hold property.
He actively opposed Sati system and the practice of polygamy. Roy advocated for equal civilian and economic rights to the British as well as Indian. He made the British Parliament agree to establish a free Indian press and consulting the views and opin-ions of Indian gentlemen before releasing any decision about India and Indian People.
To produce nationalism among the country people, he used the power of press and created powerful public opinion to support the development of India in all fields and to remove cruel customs by means of his writings and discussions in his journals. Raja Ram Mohan Roy was different from conventional revolutionary who hatred British involvement in the transformation of India.
He set up a great example before the world by saving the culture and civilization of India at the toughest time and so he will be remember always as a "prophet of coming Humanity". Raja Ram Mohan Roy is the only person who did a major thing of removing the practice of 'sati',the unbearable practice which was in vogue. Raja Ram Mohan Roy was instrumental in widow remarriages and the abolition of 'sati'. He fought against British on the proclamation o Doctrine of Lapse and made Lord Dalhousie to withdraw the proclamation. This enables the childless kings to adapt children and declare as legal heirs.
