Why is via rail expensive

In those third world countries: employee costs, maintenance costs, cheap labour so they can afford to have low ticket prices. Here, we have high costs to operate trains. Engineers, employees, maintenance staff costs alot more here relative to the third world country.

Business has to be profitable, hence the costs translates into high ticket prices. Not to mention unions, they help to keep wages artificially higher than the market demands. I think VIA is pretty competitve.. Their first class service is pretty nice. Personally, I'd much rather take an airplane because of the speed though; it'd be great if we had high speed rail here! The Great Western Way offers a dramatic route that wends its way across the landscape, through the prairies and the magnificent Rocky Mountains.
