While both Plan Peisey and Vallandry offer good value chalet accommodation with superb access to the ski area, there is little on offer in terms of a nightlife, making these villages better suited to families who want to concentrate on skiing rather than party animals. Accommodation here is mostly traditional in style, which makes them more attractive looking than many of the other resorts in the region.

Les Arcs is more about functionality and great skiing than luxury and glamour. Having said that, there are some high-end chalets and apartments to choose from dotted around resort. You can find some luxury chalet-style apartments in the charming resort of Arc , a quiet spot with great facilities.

Arc , the highest of the Les Arcs' villages, also offers some of the highest-end apartments in the area. Recently built, they offer modern decor and state-of-the-art facilities. Are there any 5-star hotels in Les Arcs? The first five-star hotel in the Paradiski ski area, Taj-I Mah , opened in Arc in with all you might expect from a luxury establishment: elegant decor, gourmet restaurants, a relaxing spa, an in-house ski rental shop and, of course, ski-to-door access.

Groups have very specific needs, namely a big enough space and easy access to the slopes and the resort's amenities. Arc is where all the action takes place, making it a very popular destination for groups, especially younger crowds.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants in town, as well as activities to keep everyone entertained.

Arc also has a great selection of large apartments ideal for groups in a quieter atmosphere. When travelling with young children, you ideally want to stay somewhere that has lots of facilities and services nearby so that you don't have to travel long distances to get to the slopes or the restaurants. The quieter villages of Arc and Arc tend to be especially popular with families. Providing easy access to the Paradiski ski area, they offer a slower pace of life that appeals to those travelling with younger children.

If it's off-the-slope entertainment you're after, perhaps because you're coming with older children who need to burn off energy, then Arc is the place for you — there's lots to do here! Les Arcs has a huge number of catered chalets and self-catered apartments on offer, many of which are on the affordable end of the spectrum. In general, the further away from the centre you get, the cheaper the prices are. Anywhere, really.

Well known for its affordability, finding a bargain in Les Arcs is easier than in many other Alpine resorts. Arc offers some older but renovated, budget-friendly apartments high on the mountain while, lower down, Plan Peisey, Vallandry and Peisey Nancroix offer great value for money, especially when it comes to booking chalets. Ski-to-door accommodation is very popular in Les Arcs, which means that prices are usually more expensive than the accommodation a bit further away from the slopes.

The traditional villages of Peisey, Vallandry and Villaroger bookend the four purpose-built resort bases — roughly named after the height at which they are located — , , the newest and , all of which offer a huge number of good value apartments and are traffic-free. Most accommodation is in self-catered apartments, which doesn't suit all.

The terrain is very varied and unlike many big French resorts, there are some great tree-lined runs to head to in a snowstorm — our favourites are the routes served by the Grizzly chairlift.

On a sunny day the Arc bowl provides some great cruising, whilst the Aiguille Rouge offers some good challenges for advanced and expert skiers, including the epic descent all the way from m down to the small hamlet of Villaroger down at m.

Each of the main Les Arcs villages have a good beginner area and a number of free lifts for learners to use. Les Arcs is an excellent area for intermediates — most of the terrain is accessible and not too steep. If the weather is bad then head to the trees above Vallandry, but otherwise the entire area is within reach. Keen intermediates should purchase the Paradiski upgrade to also explore La Plagne. The best of the terrain lies above the Arc bowl, off the Varet Gondola or from the top of the Aiguille Rouge.

Each of the Les Arcs resorts holds a number of events throughout the year. The summer, on the other hand, attracts a number of trail running and cycling competitions, as well as live concerts. Les Arcs was the first purpose-built ski resort constructed from scratch in France. Inspired by Le Corbusier, they can still be admired nowadays. Also in Les Arcs, the Aiguille Rouge cable car, which takes you up to m, offers wonderful views over the mountains. Arc , meanwhile, has the majority of the resort's nightlife — the other three bases are quieter.

Those who want to ski fast and hard all day and party at night won't find much better than this village. Its top peak is L'Aiguille Rouge, 3,m 10,ft high. Snow conditions in Les Arcs are generally reliable since the resort is so high, but an arsenal of snow-making equipment has been developed to combat any issues, including the creation of a huge artificial lake to supply the whole network of cultivated snow.
